What Inclines us to Appreciate Music?
Written By Riley Bernal
Music has always been a symbol of freedom and expression, dating back many centuries. In Ancient Greece, it was believed that music was a tool to heal the mind and soul. As we evolved, music evolved with us. In the Renaissance and Baroque periods, music began to accompany the rising arts like ballet and opera. Modern day music has since branched off into thousands of genres and sub-genres. It is a method of communication and connection for all people.
Exchanging music has become an especially vulnerable experience. With the simple act of physically exchanging an earbud, you take down your walls to share the tender lyrics and enchanting melodies you enjoy. You open a window to sharing an experience that shaped you into the person you are. Music surrounds us everywhere we go. It is scientifically proven to alter our moods and change the way we perceive the world.
It is possible that our connection to music stems from our familiarity with rhythm, stemming from our ancestors. The pace of a steady stride against the ground. The jazz-like sporadic chirp of birds in the morning. The harmonic drone of wind in the cold. Tracing back the official origin of music is difficult, but the Earth has had music for us to enjoy since the dawn of time. It is in our biology to slow down and appreciate the rhythm: natural or man-made.
