Phone Usage During School Hours
Written By Jackie Cardenas
Schools around the United States still allow the usage of mobile phones or have not fully enforced the restriction of phones. The Pew Research Center found that 72% of high school teachers in the United States from K-12 have reported that students have been distracted by their phones. Phones are a distraction to a student’s learning, due to my own experience I see the majority of students going on TikTok or to message friends when using their phone during class time. An article by Leslie Katz states that many students have used their phones to be on social media to message friends or see the latest pop culture on Instagram. Educators have witnessed students using their phone as a tool for bullying and to film fights during school. This results in fights being posted online for parents and other students to view, which raises negative consequences for the schools, causing enrollment to decline.
Such things distract students and cause them to focus more on social media and other online platforms rather than focusing on academic performance, losing focus on their studies. Although some students use their phones to make emergency phone calls, the majority of students mainly want something else to do that distracts them from school work. This issue makes the students lose focus on work making them have lower grades and decline academic performance. This could eventually affect the students on a larger scale such as not being on track for graduation and going out to the real world.
